If you’re bothered by your double chin but not quite ready to commit to plastic surgery, there’s good news! Kybella is a breakthrough treatment that can slim your chin with a series of injections.

Your double chin has a medical name: submental fullness. You can have a double chin even if your diet is flawless and every workout is on point because whether or not you have that extra fat pad often has to do with your genetic makeup.

The experts at Valencia Medical Center, led by Ahmad Ibrahim, DO, offer a treatment that may be just right to reduce the fullness of your double chin. We work closely with you to understand your medical history and your goals in an effort to determine if you’re a good candidate for Kybella®.

Submental fullness

Everyone has some fat under their chin; however, the small fat pad is sometimes not as small as you might prefer. And, both gaining weight and aging can lead to an accumulation of fat under your chin.

If your double chin bothers you, you’re not alone. Each year the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery conducts a survey among consumers regarding reasons they explore having cosmetic procedures. In 2021, 70% of consumers surveyed reported they were bothered by excess fat under their chin or their neck.

Kybella basics

Kybella is FDA-approved and doesn’t involve surgery at all. The active ingredient in Kybella is a substance called deoxycholic acid, which is a synthetic form of stomach acid. When injected, it targets, destroys, and digests fat cells.

Kybella was approved for treating submental fullness in 2015. Since then, patients and physicians have rated the treatment as being effective. During clinical trials, more than 80% of participants reported being significantly more satisfied with their appearance following treatment.

Kybella isn’t a single injection. Most patients have significant improvements in facial contours and their chin profiles after completing 2-4 treatment sessions spaced about a month apart. However, downtime is minimal, unlike with liposuction, which requires significant healing.

The reason your sessions happen over time is that the injections dissolve the membrane of the fat cells, then your body eliminates them. All of that takes time. Your results will become more apparent as the fat cells are destroyed and removed.

Are you a candidate?

We need to review your medical history to determine whether or not Kybella is right for you. It works best in people who have moderate to severe submental fullness.

Your skin should also be in generally good condition. You need to have enough elasticity for it to tighten up once the pad of fat is removed so that you won’t have any issues with sagging.
