Although spider veins don’t usually present a serious health threat, you may find that they make you so uncomfortable you won’t wear certain clothing items or do some activities. Sclerotherapy could be a good solution for you.

Do you avoid wearing shorts or a bathing suit? If you have spider veins on your legs, you may feel uncomfortable showing them. You can gain back your confidence by eliminating spider veins or varicose veins.

At Valencia Medical Center, Dr. Ahmad Ibrahim and his talented team understand how important it is to feel good about how you look. If you’re too uncomfortable to show your legs, you may skip some healthy activities, like swimming or playing tennis, or pass up social activities. Sclerotherapy is an effective procedure for eliminating unsightly veins in your lower limbs.

The cause of spider veins and varicose veins

You may wonder why the ropey blue-black or red veins appeared to begin with. It has to do with several factors, such as genetics, job or hobbies, and how your veins work.

Each time your heart beats, it pumps your blood back toward your heart. But between beats, the force of gravity pulls your blood back down toward the earth. Your veins have a system of valves that close between heartbeats so that your blood continues back to your heart.

Over time, these valves can begin to leak a bit, allowing the blood to pool around them, resulting in spider veins. Spider veins can look small and red, while thicker and darker blood vessels are called varicose veins.  Most people don’t like the way they look.

How sclerotherapy helps

Sclerotherapy is an effective, safe, minimally invasive procedure to treat spider veins and varicose veins that have been in use since the 1930s. When you have sclerotherapy, your doctor injects a solution into the treated veins. The solution irritates the blood vessel's lining, eventually collapsing and scars over.

Once the blood vessels scar over, blood stops flowing through it and fades. Some people may need more than one treatment to get the best result.

How sclerotherapy feels

Since sclerotherapy is minimally invasive, you don’t need to worry about an incision healing. Most people find the procedure slightly uncomfortable but not terribly painful. You may feel muscle cramping or the site of the injection may sting a bit.

The discomfort should be minimal. If you feel that it’s more than minimal, be sure to let our team know.

After your treatment, you may need to avoid intense exercise, wear compression socks, and avoid the sun, but you won’t need recovery time—you should be able to go on with your normal daily activities immediately following your appointment.

Your sclerotherapy treatment should only take about 30 minutes. We can target multiple veins in one appointment.

Don’t live with unsightly spider veins or varicose veins. Schedule an appointment at Valencia Medical Center today to find out if you’re a candidate for sclerotherapy.
